An addition that remembered teachers

A reported 1939 dedication honored two teachers. That date tells us something specific—not every detail of the construction.

Remembering people through a building.

Betty Plank’s Historic Ashland County II reports that an addition to Pleasant Street School was dedicated in 1939, honoring former teachers Anna Gill Greshner and Charlotte Dunn. This is a useful reminder that changes to a school were part of its human history as well as its physical one.

A dedication is a particular milestone.

The reported year belongs to the dedication. It does not, by itself, establish when construction began, how long it took, or every later alteration. Earlier uncertain dates should not be converted into a confident construction schedule.

What to look for next.

A dedication program, board records or a contemporary report might explain more about the teachers and the addition. Until those sources are checked, the named dedication remains the documented starting point.
